Measures regarding storage of metallic mercury considered waste

In the Official Gazette of Romania, Part I, no. 126 of 20 February 2014 was published the Government Decision no. 95/2014 for the approval of management measures and specific criteria for the storage of metallic mercury considered waste.

According to the normative act, the storage of metallic mercury considered as waste is authorized under the provisions of Law no. 211/2011, regarding waste regime.

The landfill site operator must inform the competent authorities about any significant adverse environmental effects that are discovered during the procedures of supervision and control.
The landfill site operator is obliged to respect the decision of the competent authorities regarding the nature and timing of remedial measures and the cost of these measures will be covered by the operator.

The metallic mercury is stored separately from other waste and the containers are stored in basins covered properly, with no cracks or openings and waterproof to metallic mercury, having an adequate volume for the amount of mercury stored.

The normative act establishes specific requirements for temporary storage of metallic mercury for periods of over one year.
