EU Justice Scoreboard – 2021 On Tuesday, September 14, 2021, the High Court of Cassation and Justice has published the EU Justice Scoreboard for 2021. The Scoreboard provides an annual overview comprising comparative data on the efficiency, quality and independence of justice systems in all EU member states. Among this year’s key findings are the ongoing digitalisation of justice systems, challenges regarding the public opinion on judicial independence, and an overview of the bodies and authorities involved in the appointment of Supreme Court judges. UN warns about human rights risks of AI On Wednesday, September 15, 2021, the UN human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, has warned the member states about the dangers that certain artificial intelligence technologies pose to human rights, and has recommended that states should place moratoriums on the sale and use of artificial intelligence systems until adequate safeguards are put in place. Michelle Bachelet has stated that, even though useful, artificial intelligence systems may have “negative, even catastrophic” effects on human rights.[source]

European Commission introduces HERA, the European Health Emergency preparedness and Response
On Thursday, September 16, 2021, the European Commission has launched HERA, the European Health Emergency preparedness and Response Authority, the next step towards completing the European Health Union, with the purpose of preventing and responding more efficiently to public health emergencies. HERA is set up to detect, and rapidly respond to potential cross-border health emergencies, by ensuring the development, manufacturing, procurement, and equitable distribution of key medical countermeasures.[source]

European Lawyers Day event: “No justice without independent lawyers” The National Association of Romanian Bars will host an event with the Bucharest Bar on October 22, 2021, where members of international associations will also be present. The theme of the international event is “No justice without independent lawyers”, and has been put forth by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe. [source]

Romania publishes COVID-19 travel lists On Friday, September 17, 2021, Romania has published its official COVID-19 travel lists, classifying countries/regions in red, yellow and green arieas according to their COVID-19 incidence rate. [source]
